Broughton Archipelago Six

Day Orca Expedition

kayakers and floatplane Our Broughton Archipelago Six Day Orca Expedition allows us to really explore deep into the Broughton Archipelago while ensuring that we have time to experience the incredible wildlife, scenery, local history and paddling that this remote wilderness area has to offer. We paddle out and return by water taxi which allows us to probe deep into the wilderness in a limited amount of time, while eliminating revisiting areas you have already paddled. The first two days are spent in Johnstone Strait, an area frequented by both Orca and Humpback whales in addition to the plethora of wildlife inhabiting these waters, so sightings are frequent and unforgettable. Days three through six are spent exploring the island maze and kayakers paradise of the Broughton Archipelago. You will be introduced to the aboriginal history of the area as we seek out the ancient war canoe paths of the native inhabitants. Looking over the side of your kayak the waters abound with life in the shallows. Birds of many variations proliferate the region. Dolphin and porpoise abound, as well as the ever-present seal. You will see ancient rock paintings on cliff walls and visit old village sites including Mamalalcolla, Village of the Last Potlatch. This area is typically much quieter than the Johnstone Strait as the tidal currents that must be traversed keep many people away. As we get deeper into the islands you will discover tiny pockets of civilization tucked away in hidden coves. Some of these we will visit to meet with the people who have made this area their home and listen to some of their fascinating tales. We will even find you a remote post office from where you can mail your postcards.

This tour is a favourite for everyone who wants to encounter our beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife in a physically low impact, non-polluting and natural manner. Remeber our group sizes are small!

While this tour has plenty to keep the experienced kayaker interested, it is also well within the capability of most novices however, previous exposure to the wilderness and back country camping will increase your comfort on this trip. We will typically paddle 10 to 14 kilometres per day (around 7-8 Nautical Miles) usually in stable tandem kayaks. Single kayaks may be available for those with previous kayaking experience and knowledge of self-rescue techniques.

It is an ideal tour for those who are passing through the North Island as it provides a marvellous, relaxed way to get out, away from civilization and experience the true majesty of British Columbia while encountering our spectacular wildlife. Come visit before progress obliterates how it used to be.

Escape the motel for a week and spend it under the stars on a remote beach while you listen for the sound of a whale blowing in the distance. With tours departing every Sunday, you can be sure we have a Broughton Archipelago Six Day Orca Expedition that suits your schedule.
