Johnstone Strait Orca Opportunity Day Paddle

killer whale The North Island Kayak Johnstone Strait Orca Opportunity Day Paddle provides an opportunity for everyone to spend a day enjoying the unparalleled scenery and wildlife of the area around Telegraph Cove, while providing opportunity to explore the coast in the direction of the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve and Killer Whale Sanctuary.

Our store and departure location dircetly adjacent to the boat ramp in the heart of Telegraph Cove enables us and you to spend the maximum amount of time kayaking out in Johnstone Strait. We believe you are better served sitting in the kayak than sitting in a minibus getting to the launch site. Our guides will take you for a leisurely paddle along the north eastern coast of Vancouver Island exploring the Wastall Islets, Bauza Cove and the Blinkhorn Peninsula with an emphasis on wildlife, scenery and nature interpretation.

The tour route provides our guides with the opportunity to share with you, their knowledge of the area, intertidal creatures, plants and depending on how your luck is running, Orca or Killer Whales & other whales, Pacific Harbor Seals, various Sea Lions, Dolphins & Porpoises, Deer, Mink, River Otters, Bald Eagles and Black Bears; All in their natural environment.

We realize that it's hard not to have high expectations of seeing the Killer Whales or Orca up close however, it's important to keep in mind that we can only provide the opportunity. An encounter with these magnificaent creatures while in a kayak is a very unique, unforgettable experience. With this in mind our tour will keep you in the areas known to be frequented by these spectacular mammals for as long as we can. We have an excellent history of killer whale encounters and will see them more often than not during July, August and September. Although we do offer the tour in June, the focus is more on the scenery and other wildlife as the killer whales are nowhere near as frequent in this month.

Our guides carry hydrophones, an under water microphone. These enable us to hear the whales as well as see them!

A kayak is an incredible way to experience this area as it is silent and non-polluting. No previous experience is required as we use very stable tandem and three seater kayaks with small group sizes.

Bring your lunch as we will stop for a while on a remote beach at lunchtime to eat and stretch our legs.

With a Johnstone Strait Orca Day Paddle scheduled to depart every day, there is sure to be one that meets your schedule. As we run these tours with small group sizes it is important that you pre-book in order to avoid disappointment.
